BABBACOMBE

The next bay around from Torbay is the beautiful Babbacombe bay. Babbacombe’s two beaches are backed by steep cliffs made from the striking red sandstone which is a notable feature of this stretch of the Devon coast. Help is at hand for those wanting to get to the top in the form of the Babbacombe Cliff Railway, a historic piece of engineering which was completed in 1926. It was built by the Torquay Tramway Company and cost the princely sum of £15,648. It was closed for 10 years due to the war, reopening in 1951. The latest refurbishment was carried out in 1993-1995. In the village itself, the main attraction for families is the Babbacombe Model Village, which includes miniature gardens and railways as well as buildings.
